In the first session Prathap shares with us on how he started, as a child who enjoyed doodling, drawings etc and had always been encouraged by the local communities people. Modi also tells us about his relation on working with clay and doing sculptural work which he accepts has a big influence on the kind of work he executes today, i.e woodcut prints. A coming together of interests in terms of engraving and playing around with wood material.

Modi highlights the need  of an artist being independent of tools used, achieving work in their best results through minimum requirements, being creative and smart with limited resources. Although with the development of technology and various modern methods for printing are available , the condition of not being able to do work because of lack of tools should not be the cause, hence the focus on using traditional methods to bring out the work! I too agree with the artist in this regard, but I suppose different practices require different methods and tools.

When you take a look at the body of work done by Prathap, Scale is one of the main factors which allow the audiences/spectators to be fully absorbed within the highly textured prints. The Subjects relate to nature majorly, using specific visuals of  plants, or an object or even landscapes to talk about his ideas and concepts.  These indications of objects or subjects speak of the metaphorical thoughts of how he perceives his world. The narration takes place between simple objects which are connected to his  lifestyle back in Andhra Pradesh.

His current work includes the journey of water, symbolic interpretations with elements coming from the sea side where the artist resides at his native home. Specific flowers that grow near the shores, coconuts and many more, all coming together to speak of notions of environments, life and death. Pretty intense I must say!

In the 2nd session, Modi talks about his experiences abroad, the wonderful exchanges of cultures, traditions, stories through art with the foreign countries. Sometimes including the landscapes which are new and foreign or even having the native people dressed in their native Outfit  as part of the process for his work. He mentions that this exchange of learning and sharing through residences has had so much of a positive impact in his views about himself and of other cultures.

In order to see his work you can find him on google!! Just type in prathap modi !!!
