Ambika Aka Computational mama is an awesome individual with whom I had the pleasure of doing a very interesting podcast episode with. I was pretty  nervous about requesting her for a conversation , but I must say she was one of the most positive and energetic individuals I have come across!! And the podcast went on to a totally new space of learning and new ways of understanding technology as a tool to express, to create art and to share one's thoughts.

Coming from a design background, Computational mama ( C M) once worked in a museum where she tells us about her everyday work ranging from designing to art directions etc. The amount of work was unlimited but slow, her positive mindset pushed her to accept whatever the work she was given because it was a way to learn and improve her skills!!  This all takes a drastic turn when the Lockdown happens and everyone in the globe were found in almost similar situations especially with finding work/job etc. Don’t get me wrong though, this did not stop Computational mama from exploring! while exploring, baam she bumps into the world of coding!  And that’s when she knew she had discovered something. One discovery led to another,  gets married, blessed with a  young son aged five, she narrates her life stories through coding and generative Art.

The discussion we had in the episode (which is divided into 3 sessions) all contain very valuable lessons of life actually. It's funny because prior to the conversation with Ambika I actually thought it would be a very very technical subject which I was pretty nervous to talk about as I still don’t know much about these subjects. Yet when our podcast session ended , I realized that this session actually focused more on the human factor, specifically motherhood and coding, Machine learning, Artificial intelligence are tools. This perspective is very unique and to be able to take care of her child and learning these tools is super inspiring. Remember reader, you have to listen to the sessions in order to understand what I am speaking. It's way more meaningful to hear her speak directly than me trying to break down her words.

There are certain keywords and areas of subjects in each of the three sessions. Allow me to give you a little peek into them.

First Session: click hear to listen to the podcast Session 1 podcast

A General introduction about Computational mama, and how she began her journey!! It’s a must for the listeners to truly understand how one thing leads to another and the choices she makes to have her voice heard through her work.

Second session: click hear to listen to the podcast Session 2 podcast

Ambika shares with us her inspirations, and enlightens us about her relationship with coding, how it has altered her in her ways of expressing, especially taking in the consideration of becoming a mother! One of the books she mentions in this second session is "Baby on the fire Escape" By Julie Philips.

Although the subject's intensity can become very dark, Computational mama puts out her thoughts in a very friendly, positive manner. Which I believe is a vital state to be in for a learner. Few points Ambika highlights are

  • The way the AI are in many way biased

  • The challenges while working with AI

  • How you need to keep doing what you love and not forget your families!!!

If you are one of those people who has a little geek element and want to learn about coding and generative art you can get in touch with her through her Instagram page!! And I bet you wont be regretting your time spent learning from her!
